Fact Fluency
Mastery of addition and subtraction facts is an important skill that can positively impact future math achievement. Here are some fun ways that you can practice math facts at home:
- Download free apps on devices. Some free kid favorites are: Math Slicer, Bubble Pop, and basic flashcard apps like Math Practice, Subtraction Flashcards, etc.
- Use the games linked in the "Student Resources" tab at the top of this website
- Print flashcards from the links below, make them, or purchase them from a store (the Dollar Tree typically carries them)
- Use a fun writing tool to write math fact answers - sidewalk chalk, glitter gel pens, finger paint, etc.
- Spread shaving cream on a plate. Say a math fact aloud. Have your child draw the answer in the shaving cream.
- Write the numbers 0-10 outside with sidewalk chalk. Give a math fact. Jump to land on the answer. When facts 0-10 have been mastered, write the numbers 0-18.
- Answer as many addition facts as possible each time you stop at a red light in the car. How many can be solved before it's time to go again??
- Put a flashcard on your forehead so you can't see it. Have your partner tell you the sum or answer. Guess a math fact that equals the given sum. Keep guessing until you guess the right fact with that sum.
- Make a Memory game by writing a math fact on one index card and the answer on another index card. Try to find matches!
- Write the numbers 0-10 on a big piece of paper. Say a fact aloud or flip over a flashcard. Shine a flashlight on the answer.
- Play WAR with flashcards. Who has the greater sum or answer?
- Put flashcards in order from the one with the smallest answer to the largest answer.
- Set a timer for 2 minutes. Go through a deck of flashcards and answer as many as possible. Set the timer. Go again. Did you answer more this time?
